Why do people say "The car is making a funny noise" when their is usually nothing funny about the cost of car repairs these days??

How true ...... and it brings to mind a question I often ask: "Why is it, when we're angry at what other drives do on the roads, we call them 'clowns'? Isn't that a friendly and happy thing to be?"
