The Cover Up

Sporting a new hair cut  courtesy of my friend  The Bonster,  I hit the streets of Cambridge, MA with my buddy Joe, looking  for some live music and a few cold I.P.A.'s

Joe had told me about an Irish Pub (The Plough & Stars, 912 Massachusetts Avenue) that featured live music at 4pm. It's a small place so if you want to catch a seat at the bar, get there early. We did and  the Englishman who was sitting next to me at the bar told me before the band began to play that  "The bar should charge admission because these guys (Josh Lederman and the Csars ) were really good"


He was right and throw in a surprise appearance...My son Patrick stopped in to see me and was able to listen to a song before heading out to do whatever 18 year olds do...

I was particularly impressed with the Clarinet player, really don't see that in a bar band too often, and the fiddle player was also quite good. It was a mix of Irish music and whatever else the band felt like playing...

After the show we headed to Somerville and ate one of the BEST Burgers and absolutely delicious Fries and Onion Rings at R. F. O'Sullivan and Son. This was Joe's idea as well. It didn't hurt that Joe knows the management and we were able to get a table in few minutes.

To finish off the night,  I left Joe with his friend at the restaurant and I went to the Lizard Lounge,  a short walk as you can see in the map above,  for    The Cover-Up hosted by Brendan Boogie "A Tribute To Neil Young"

The Cover Up series of shows is something Brendan gets some of the most popular bands in the Boston music scene to come down and play in this tiny basement bar with velvet walls where Budweiser  Bottles are only $3.25 and they play covers of some of the legendary musicians of our time.

 

Josh Buckley

The Show was awesome and the musicians didn't just play the notes they played their hearts out. It was a mix of solos and ensemble bands. Neil Young's music can be  acoustic or filled with heavy metal romps. All the acts were great ! I spoke with the singer, Josh Buckley,  from The Gilded Splinter's who hopes to release their newest album, HOUSE,  sometime in March 2010 and  he told me he was hoping to find places to play up in my neck of the woods...I've gotta send him a list of  places so I can check out his music next time.

The Lizard lounge had some great looking Nachos but I was stuffed with Burger and so I didn't get to try them. Overall I think it was a great venue to see a show and you won't go broke paying $3.25 for a bottle of Budweiser....

I took some fairly good pics but I will have to post them later as I left my camera in my friend Jackie's car !! Hope she locked it!!

New Music Source

Sad Steve

That's the place. I love music and it's even better when I can listen to just about anything I want, anytime. Since becoming a chronic web surfer I have found Last FM, Pandora, Limewire and many others. Recently I was told about Sad Steve and this site allows you to listen to songs from virtually any artist. It doesn't require you to install any software or pay a fee for listening or downloading songs.

They do have some songs that don't work or won't play, but I like the variety and often go to the page they refer to as "The Percolator" which plays a wide variety of music. They also have mixes for workouts, just chillin or world music.

If you are listening to a song you really like you can share it with others via email, posting it on facebook or just downloading it and putting it on a cd for your next car ride.

Music, Deezer a new Music Playground, Mahjongg

I don't know about you but I like having music playing when I am writing a new post or playing endless games of Mahjong...So I found a new place to listen to about any kind of music you want...There are some songs that you cannot listen too, but I understand Deezer is trying to reach an agreement with those Artists and Labels.

Now I have had a Pandora Radio account for quite awhile..That's the Music Genome project where you plug in the Artists you like and then it builds a radio station based around the music you tell them you like...It works and I listen to it a lot...but Deezer is different in that you can pick a favorite, say, Bob Dylan: and get just about every song he ever wrote. Then you just click on a song you want and it just starts playing and keeps playing one after another.

I did this with The Beatles and it just gives you page after page of their songs.

You can also create your own playlists from their extensive catalogs. I have started a few like this one

So if you like to have some tunes playing in the background while you are playing solitaire, writing your next post or constructing a witty comment to leave here visit Deezer ...if you like to make your own playlists.

I will continue to use Pandora as well because they offer up a lot of music I've never heard before. Plus they do a lot of the work for me.

Now if I could just figure out how to get these things to work in the Shower!!

When You Were Young

YOUNG vs OLD

"When you were Young" a line from one of the many songs from The Killers show Sunday is still ringing in my head...I'll get to the reason in a moment..Let me say by the grace of Alcohol and Ibuprofen The Killers show was very well done. While I honestly don't know the name of the opening act, they were all from Japan and sang Beatles covers..I really enjoyed them...Now... the real news

Prior to the show we had a large family gathering...29 people....and we ate and drank and enjoyed each others company..I went outside after eating and saw the under 2o somethings playing catch with the football...Now I can do that, said my stupid inner voice...I'm only 40 something..

I grabbed another 40 something and we challenged the under 21 somethings to a game of 2 hand touch..Now the 20 somethings started with the ball but we stopped them and while I felt good about that, the warning signs should have been apparent..They were not breathing heavy and my teammate said he ate too much and felt like he might puke...But we kept at it and while I did throw an interception maybe two plays later and watched the young one score...We did manage to tie it up.

It was then that my left foot decided not to play anymore. I mean this has happened to me before while painting my hand will cramp and say "I'd rather be holding a beer!" This time it was my foot saying "Hello we're going to a concert tonight, I'm leaving"

Fortunately for me when my hand cramps up I just use the other on to paint with. Unfortunately, when my Left Foot decides to quit, bad things happen...See picture below

Needless too say while The Killers were good, My foot is killing me and then there's the line to that song playing in my head!1
